Through my 17 years of playing organized football, I have had many coaches in my career, and all of them had different ways of motivating their players. Some would have me so amped up that at kick-off, my eyes would Swell up with tears, ready to destroy somebody. But after that kick-off was over, that Hell spit-fire sermon that I received no longer existed.
Ultimately, a coaches team is a reflection of himself. If the players can tell that their coach is committed to excellence in everything that he does, that will show in their game play on the field. That brings me to this poem that I read about motivation:
I’d rather see a sermon than to hear one any day;I’d rather one should walk with me then merely show the way;The eye’s a better pupil and more willing than the ear;Fine counsel is confusing, but examples are always clear. And, best of all, the preachers are the men who live their creeds; For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.I can soon learn to do it, if you let me see it done;I can see your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true,But I’d rather get my lesson by observing what you do;For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give; But there is no misunderstanding how you act and how you live!
Along with that poem, there are also the leaders of the team who have an impact on team motivation. And they also have a responsibility to be committed to excellence, even more so than the coach, because they can relate to the team as their peer and they are actually going through these strenuous situations together. So as long as you show your players that you are a winner and your committed to excellence and your team leaders are strong on and off the field, player motivation will be an easier situation to handle.
With that said, I will dedicate my player motivation section to things that I have read and coaches quotes that I feel left more of and impact than just a quick high at the beginning of a game.
