Every coach that has ever coached football knows about and has run some version of cover 3.  The reason for this is because they feel that it’s a safe call.  It’s secure versus  the run because of the 8 man front and the coverage is easy to teach.  The problem is some coaches don’t take the time to fine tune the intimate details of the defense.  Base cover 3 is a true zone drop defense and cannot be run vs. a spread set without a seams adjustment check.  Any formation that can get four vertical receivers down field hurts regular cover 3.  A seams check tells the hook players to carry verticals by # 2.  Here is base cover 3 vs. a regular formation. breakdown02

(SS & Will Backer) Curl/flat droppers

are to drop underneath the curl and expand when a receiver takes them to the flat.  Coaches take that little detail for granted.  They tell the curl/ flat dropper that they have the flats; so they end up sprinting to the flats, leaving the corner to defend the curl and the deep ball.  When playing vs. a slot you are to line up 6 to 7 yards off and head up to outside.  Punch the receiver inside with one hand under his shoulder then widen to your responsibility.  By playing the curl/flat technique properly it takes the pressure off of the corner allowing the defense to play more efficiently.

Sam & Mike are responsible for the hook zone areas.  They are to stay close to routes in their zones but don’t jump or chase routes.  They are to read and react when the front hand of the QB comes off of the ball.  If you have backers that are jumping & chasing routes they will just open up holes between them and the safety.

Corners are responsible for the deep 3rd of the field.  Most corners in lower level football are so concerned with not getting beat deep that they backpedal themselves out of a play.  Corners have to have confidence in themselves and in their ability to know your job and do your job.  Now cover three does make the job a little easier in that a good curl flat dropper will take away the intermediate curl and out while expanding inside the #1 receiver.  This allows you to be more aware of the skinny post 15 to 16 yards, the deep out, deep curl, and the go route.  Good hook droppers should eliminate the dig with good deep drops.

Deep middle safety has pass first and should lean to the passing strength.  Don’t be lazy in getting to the middle of the field.  Break at angles when the ball is thrown, don’t round off your breaks.
